Phil Robertson Passes Away
On Sunday, May 25th, Phil Robertson, the well-known figure from Duck Dynasty, succumbed after a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and other health complications.
After spending some time with his grieving family, I returned to discuss Phil’s death and the details surrounding his funeral, which included his sons Jace and Al, on what they called an “embarrassing” podcast.
The funeral was an intimate family gathering, attended by about 300 to 400 people, fitting for Phil. There, the family worshipped, shared the gospel, and honored his legacy.
Jace shared, “I had to step back.” He remembered Phil’s well-known phrase that he often repeated. The ceremony took place in the same church where Phil had committed his life to Christ. All four Robertson brothers—Jase, Al, Willie, and JEP—spoke, as requested by Miss Kay. Phil’s daughter also shared her thoughts, and some of his grandchildren led a moving worship service, bringing many to tears.
Among the speakers was Phil’s brother, Uncle Si, who humorously provided moments of levity during the speeches, despite opting out of giving his own.
He recalled being Phil and Kay’s partner during their early dating years and how he became, in a way, an echo for Phil throughout his journey.
Phil was laid to rest next to his sister, Jan Dasher, in the cemetery.
Jace’s son, Reid, mentioned that numerous individuals who didn’t know Phil personally reached out in the days following his passing, sharing how his steadfast faith had impacted their lives.
“Heaven has gained a Titan,” Reid said, referring to his grandfather.
In the weeks leading up to Phil’s passing, Jace struggled with witnessing his father’s suffering. “Every time I thought communication was lost, something would trigger a reaction from him—whether it was his grandchildren or his wife,” Jace recalled. He specifically mentioned a moment when his daughter started singing, which stirred something in Phil despite his silence that day. “It dawned on me—God does remarkable things even in suffering,” he reflected, quoting Romans 5.
During their final conversation, Jace reassured his father with the words, “You’ll see Jesus.” Phil seemed to respond with enthusiasm, saying, “Let’s go.”
