Jasmine Crockett Critiques GOP on SNAP Reforms
Democrat Jasmine Crockett from Texas has expressed her disbelief at Republican lawmakers, particularly regarding their supposed commitment to “Christian values,” while proposing changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
“Let’s be clear. SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and it’s the largest federal initiative aimed at fighting hunger in the U.S.,” Crockett stated on social media this week. “It’s astonishing that the same party that claims to uphold ‘Christian values’ would choose to take food away from those in need,” she added.
Her comments came as House Republicans unveiled a new legislative proposal as part of President Donald Trump’s significant overhaul of the SNAP program, aiming to restore it to its original purpose. The proposal suggests tightening eligibility requirements and mandates that states contribute to certain costs of the program.
A recent political discussion highlighted that the new approach would implement a cost-sharing system based on a sliding scale of SNAP benefits and payment error rates. Starting from fiscal year 2028, states with 6% to 8% error rates would absorb 15% of costs, and those with higher error rates would face increased financial responsibilities.
The House Agriculture Committee ultimately passed this legislation by a vote of 29-25.
Potential reforms also seek to crack down on criminal activities related to food stamp fraud, which has reportedly surged in recent years, with international criminal organizations becoming involved. The USDA noted that cases of EBT card theft have risen significantly.
Secretary Brooke Rollins commented on the situation, saying, “The food stamp scam is now being addressed. If you’re taking advantage of the generosity offered to struggling families and American taxpayers, we’re coming for you.” She added that under President Trump, efforts are being made to restore order and safeguard taxpayer contributions.
