Texas Democrat Critiques Redrawn District Map

Texas Democrat Jasmine Crockett criticized a newly redrawn Republican district map on Instagram Monday night, labeling it as “racist.”

Crockett commented on a video regarding the return of Texas Democrats to Austin to vote on the proposed map related to voting districts. In a broader context, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced a special election for November to let voters weigh in on new maps shaped by Democratic control in the state legislatures.

“Every racist feels the way when you call exactly what they are. It’s like knowing you’ve taken your hood off, but your hood is still there,” she expressed in her post.

In her video, Crockett argued that “democracy” appears to be “disintegrating right in front of our eyes,” pointing to the Republican map and describing the GOP’s influence in Texas as “problematic.” The discussion then shifted to California, where lawmakers are looking to challenge the state’s rezoning committee for the implementation of their own partisan maps.

The recent GOP map proposal in Texas suggests a greater percentage of Democrat seats compared to the current map in California, which also includes Republican seats.

“I’m exhausted, and if you don’t meet their energy, you’re simply outmatched. [Republicans] play consistently while we’re just sitting here,” said Crockett. She added that her experiences with her California counterparts reflect this sentiment.

Crockett previously claimed the new Texas map would undermine the voting rights of minorities during her August 9 appearance on MSNBC. However, Texas Governor Greg Abbott challenged her assertion on Fox News, stating that four out of five newly drawn GOP-leaning districts primarily represent Hispanic communities.

“I’ve realized that the challenges Democrats face in Texas stem from Hispanic, Black, and other voters whose ideas often clash with Democrat ideologies,” Abbott remarked on August 10.
