Texas Democrat Jasmine Crockett took the opportunity to bring attention to herself during a difficult time. Amid devastating floods in Texas, which resulted in at least 120 fatalities, she shared a video directed at President Donald Trump, expressing how the tragedy personally affects her. Notably, her area is about 300 miles from where the flooding worsened in Kerr County, similar to the distance between Boston and Philadelphia.
Crockett, despite a history of controversial remarks, has emerged as one of the more popular figures in her party. She began her video by stating her “heart is really heavy for all these families,” before pivoting towards Trump and how his actions seem to “harm us.”
“The sad part is that my mind will carry a level of weight that continues to suffocate me as I have to do my best to survive a government that literally opposes us,” Crockett said in an Instagram post. “In our minds, it’s a government that does everything to hurt us and not help us, and we feel motivated for ourselves.”
Interestingly, in the same post regarding the Texas floods, she also made a lighthearted comment about her hairstylist. She quipped, “My staff said everything was commenting on my Bob!” thanking the stylist for their help and finishing with a kissing face emoji.
In an imaginary Senate primary scenario, Crockett would have a substantial lead among Democratic voters, garnering 35% support, according to a poll by the National Republican Senate Committee. Fellow Democrats Beto O’Rourke and Rep. Joaquin Castro were tied at 13% in the same poll.
Even though Crockett has a promising lead in hypothetical polls, she has not formally announced any plans to challenge Republican Sen. John Cornyn for his seat in Texas.
