Race and Strategy in Texas Democratic Primary
Jasmine Crockett, a radical leftist from Texas, indicated that race played a significant role in her defeat against fellow Democrat James Talarico in the recent Senate primary. She suggested that racism, rather than just political differences, influenced the results.
“There was a lot of race involved—maybe not a lot, but definitely some racism,” Crockett remarked. “That’s just the reality of America today.” As Texas celebrates its 250 years, she seems to reflect on the deeper issues at play.
Crockett dismissed any criticism that suggested she should have campaigned more closely with Talarico. Instead, she focused on her own strategy of backing multiple candidates. She emphasized that five black men she supported in the Texas runoffs all advanced to the November elections.
“The best thing I can do for Talarico is not to be on stage with him,” she stated. “I supported five candidates in the runoff, and they all won.” This aligns with her belief that engaging voters through a variety of options can drive turnout more effectively.
She responded to critics suggesting she needed to rally behind Talarico more directly, arguing that providing various candidates for voters to back is a sound strategy. “People keep saying Jasmine has to go and hold hands. That’s not how it works,” she noted. “If you give people multiple choices, they’re more likely to participate.”
In March, Talarico triumphed over Crockett in the Texas Democratic primary, despite earlier polling that favored her. Crockett shared her doubts about the unity among black voters supporting Talarico, and she announced her intention to skip the upcoming Texas Democratic Party convention.
She expressed concerns about the lack of enthusiasm for Talarico and other statewide candidates, suggesting that many are still on the fence with just a few months until the election. “I haven’t heard much enthusiasm,” she said. “People don’t seem convinced right now, but there’s still time before November.”
When asked if she would campaign for Talarico, Crockett mentioned that her focus will remain on down-ballot races rather than the Senate race. “I don’t know. I’m really concentrating on those other races,” she concluded.
