Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett Faces Backlash for Past Comments
Jasmine Crockett, a Democratic Congresswoman from Texas, is experiencing the fallout from some controversial remarks she made, which appear to have been aimed at drawing attention after she declared her candidacy for the U.S. Senate.
During an appearance on CNN’s “The Read” with Jake Tapper, Crockett was challenged about derogatory comments she previously made regarding Latino voters. This discussion followed her remarks in a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, where she described Latino support for former President Trump as indicative of a “slave mentality.”
“I mean, it’s reminiscent of the kind of self-hatred some enslaved individuals might feel,” she reflected in 2024. Crockett pointed out that many of these Latino voters, being recent immigrants, displayed an odd anti-immigrant attitude, which she found perplexing. “It’s as if they’re kind of ignoring their situation,” she added.
Tapper pressed her further, pointing out that around one million Latino voters in Texas supported Trump last year. “Does that mean they all have a slave mentality?” he questioned.
“No, no, that’s not what I’m saying at all,” Crockett quickly clarified. “I don’t think all Latinos feel that way. However, those who align with Trump—well, it’s a different story.”
She elaborated, suggesting that many Latino supporters of Trump later regretted their votes once they witnessed federal agents detaining immigrants without proper cause.
In the course of the interview, Crockett seemed somewhat flustered, struggling to articulate her thoughts and becoming momentarily sidetracked. At one point, she noted, “Why do they think they’re able to outpace Latinos?” She expressed confusion over the attitudes some people took towards immigrants, especially those escaping dangerous situations.
This isn’t the first instance where Crockett has made headlines, as she gained notoriety for her strong criticisms of Trump and his supporters. In August, she exclaimed, “This is not America! This is just a nightmare!” expressing her fervent dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies. She later indicated that her entry into the Senate race was fueled by a desire to retaliate against the Texas Republican Party for their recent redistricting that seemed to benefit GOP interests in the midterms.
