Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett is struggling with fundraising and campaign spending in her Senate race. An ally, Jen Ramos, who is a political commentator and part of the Texas Democratic Party Executive Committee, suggested that Crockett’s unique approach to campaigning is a result of not being able to use traditional strategies like large advertising purchases or hiring a campaign manager. She remarked that traditional methods weren’t designed for candidates of color.
According to AdImpact, a political advertising company, Crockett began airing TV ads recently and reported bookings of $112,000 in traditional television advertising. This move comes shortly after her main opponent, Democratic state Representative James Talarico, spent over $100,000 for a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl, which focused on issues like stopping Congressional stock trading and increasing taxes on billionaires. Supporters of Crockett have indicated that ads attacking Talarico have also surfaced.
In a recent social media ad, Crockett used an AI-generated image depicting President Trump in a cartoon style, which has drawn some scrutiny. The ad highlights her as a “defender” of Texans, although it lacks specifics about her policies. Talarico has been advocating for legislation to regulate political advertisements generated by AI.
Talarico has already invested $6.6 million in various advertising platforms, significantly outpacing Crockett’s $260,000 spending. He has also tailored ads specifically for Spanish speakers. Crockett’s deputy campaign manager, Karol Limar, emphasized a rejection of conventional political strategies, suggesting that a different approach is necessary for success.
Interestingly, it took Crockett about two months after launching her campaign to add an “Issues” section to her website, which contained vague placeholder text. Although a recent poll showed her with a slight lead, another poll had Talarico ahead. Absentee voting has kicked off, with in-person early voting set to start soon.
Neither campaign responded to requests for comments regarding the ongoing race.
