A Hawaii surfer died from injuries sustained in a “shark encounter” over the weekend, authorities said.
Jason Carter, 39, of Haiku, was pulled from Paia Bay off the Hana Highway 93 beach area at 11:19 a.m. Saturday. This was announced by the Maui Police Department..
Marine safety officers brought Carter to shore on a jet ski, and first responders performed life-saving measures on the shore before the victim was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died, officials said.
The exact nature of Carter's injuries was not immediately available.
The investigation into the tragedy, which is classified as an “other type of incident,” is still ongoing.
Maui police did not immediately respond to the Post's request for further details of the deadly encounter.
