US Open Tensions: Munar and Bergs Clash After Match
During the US Open in New York’s Flushing Meadows, Spain’s Jaume Munar and Belgium’s Zizou Bergs had a heated exchange following their third-round match. Munar seemed frustrated with the noise Bergs was making throughout the match, which he felt disrupted his performance in a straight-set victory.
After the match, Bergs sought to clarify his side, expressing his surprise at Munar’s reaction. “He obviously wasn’t that happy with my groans during the game, but I didn’t know that,” Bergs remarked, emphasizing that his sounds weren’t directed at Munar.
Munar, on the other hand, felt differently, noting that Bergs’s demeanor had affected him during the match. “I think he did some wrong, but he said it wasn’t intentional. So it’s not more,” Munar explained, trying to brush off the conflict but still acknowledging it.
Additionally, there was a significant incident during the match when Bergs lost a point due to excessive frustration, slamming the ball into the stands. This lapse of control occurred while he was behind in the game, allowing Munar to take a crucial lead.
Ultimately, Munar secured his spot in the next round with a straight-set win, closing the match at 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-4. This victory represented Munar’s deepest run in a Grand Slam event so far, while Bergs, who was making his main draw debut in New York, had to exit the competition.
Munar will advance to face Italy’s 10th seed Lorenzo Sonego on Monday. It’s a significant moment for Munar, as he looks to secure a place in the quarterfinals in this final Grand Slam of the tennis season.
