Argentina’s President Warns at UN Assembly
During a speech at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, Argentina’s President Javier Milei cautioned that countries pursuing policies characterized by “current amenities,” such as unchecked public spending and extensive migration, risk “incinerating their heritage.”
Milei highlighted the tendency of politicians to favor immediate gains for votes, often ignoring the long-term repercussions. This message was a continuation of his thoughts from his previous UN speech last year, where he criticized international organizations and expressed his disdain for the UN’s perceived failure to prevent global conflicts. He described a vision where a powerful entity dictates the actions of nations and individuals alike.
The president expressed Argentina’s commitment to the foundational goals of the UN, but clarified that this does not entail sacrificing personal freedoms or the natural rights of citizens.
Milei pointed out a prevailing comfort with the present that undermines future considerations. He noted, “Discomfort undermines the votes and power of those who assume it.” He elaborated that many decision-makers often prefer to sustain the status quo, prioritizing short-term benefits over long-term consequences.
“As a result, modern states seem to favor distributing current wealth instead of incentivizing future prosperity,” he explained. “Decision-makers are constantly confronted with the choice to either uphold or destroy the legacy they have been entrusted with.” This legacy could encompass wealth, productive capacity, law, or community interests.
He warned of the dangers of choosing immediate comfort, stating that while it may yield current benefits, it leads to considerable future costs. “If I save today, tomorrow’s loss will be greater,” he remarked.
Milei spoke just days after facing a setback from an Argentine lawmaker delaying his economic recovery plan, which prompted increased public spending and strained the national budget.
“Today’s provisions don’t guarantee tomorrow’s needs,” he cautioned, advocating for a balance that fosters sustainable growth, even while recognizing the challenges presented by self-serving political interests. He asserted how policies often prioritize immediate electoral success over the future welfare of citizens.
He referred to a troubling pattern of excessive public spending, explaining that such actions hinder wealth creation and empower politicians. “Politicians gain through democratic justification while capturing more resources,” he explained, emphasizing their dual motivation to indeed betray future interests for immediate reward.
“A great man plants trees knowing he will never enjoy their shade. A miserable man cuts down those trees for his gain,” he stated reflectively.
Milei also discussed broader issues, such as rampant migration, labeling it an “invasion” due to open border policies intended for political advantage.
Praising former President Donald Trump, Milei linked Trump’s economic and immigration policies to a needed reversal of detrimental trends affecting the U.S. He admired Trump’s efforts to “clean” state agencies from leftist influences.
“The U.S. disaster is truly a global disaster,” he noted, highlighting the significance of Trump’s immigration strategies in a wider context. He cautioned that in some nations, it might already be too late to implement such changes.
Milei underscored Trump’s effort to reshape international trade dynamics, a formidable challenge to the current global economic landscape.
Following a meeting with Trump, Milei remarked on the difficult economic legacy left by the previous socialist administration, prompting Trump’s support for him as a “friend” and a “winner.” Milei expressed gratitude for this backing.
In his conclusion, Milei proposed reforms for the UN and condemned the political violence associated with leftist movements. He urged the UK to reopen negotiations regarding the Falkland Islands and called for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Milei specifically appealed to the international community for help in securing the release of Argentine Gendalm Nahiel Gallo, wrongfully detained by the Venezuelan government since last year.
