On Tuesday, Argentina’s President Javier Milei attended a reception at the U.S. embassy to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. This marked the first time an Argentine leader has participated in such Independence Day celebrations, according to local reports.
The event took place at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, specifically at Palacio Bosch, the residence of Ambassador Peter Lamelas. Over 1,500 attendees were present, including Argentine officials, diplomats, and representatives from civil society and the private sector. The embassy noted the wide-ranging friendships between the U.S. and Argentina in areas such as trade, education, culture, and security.
The gathering celebrated America’s foundational values and showcased deep ties between the two nations. Attendees were treated to various cultural performances, culminating in a special show by Jefferson Starship, a well-known American band that has significantly influenced rock music.
President Milei, who is known for his close relationship with the U.S., was joined by government ministers and legislators during the reception. Interestingly, the Argentine presidential office shared a video of him at the event featuring Village People’s famous song “YMCA,” commonly associated with President Trump’s rallies.
Ambassador Lamelas spoke at the event, highlighting the significance of the occasion: “It’s been 250 years since freedom was recognized as a God-given right.” He also mentioned that President Trump has expressed support for Argentina’s role in a new era of change.
The Brazilian news outlets emphasized that this is a notable moment—Milei’s presence at a U.S. embassy Independence Day event is unprecedented for an Argentine head of state. Although Milei didn’t deliver a speech, he did sing both the Argentine and American national anthems alongside Ambassador Lamelas. He was accompanied by his sister Karina and enjoyed performances, including a brief show by Fatima Flores, who previously dated him.
Ambassador Lamelas reiterated that the “America First” policy does not connote isolation from allies; rather, it emphasizes unity with partners. A pre-recorded message from President Trump commemorating the Independence Day anniversary was also played during the event.
Ambassador Lamelas, who fled from communist Cuba as a child, expressed his gratitude for becoming an American: “Like President Milei here, I carry the courage of a lion.”
The reception was part of “Freedom to Fifty,” a new initiative launched by the American Embassy to promote American culture across Argentina. Notable references to American cultural staples like jazz and Hollywood were included in the celebration.
As reported, President Milei was initially scheduled to visit the U.S. for the main celebrations in Washington but had to postpone his trip.
