Jay Feely Transitions from NFL to Politics

Former NFL kicker Jay Feely, who spent years in high-stress situations on the field, is now experiencing a different type of pressure as he campaigns for a congressional seat in Arizona. This comes as Republicans try to maintain their narrow majority in the House during the upcoming midterm elections.

After retiring in 2014, Feely, who is 30th on the NFL’s all-time scoring list, moved on to broadcasting before diving into the political arena. Last year, he declared his candidacy for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District as the Republican nominee. Notably, his campaign has garnered support from several notable figures in sports.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NBA standout Charles Barkley have made contributions to Feely’s campaign, as reported by the Federal Election Commission. Goodell’s donations comprised $3,500 for both the primary and general elections. It’s interesting to note that individual donors can contribute up to $7,000 in these races.

Earlier this year, Feely also received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. His campaign portrays him as a “proud conservative” focused on border security and putting “America first.”

Currently, David Schweikert, who has held the congressional seat since 2011, is running for governor. Feely’s journey in the NFL spanned various teams including the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals, wrapping up with the Chicago Bears.

In addition to Goodell and Barkley, other notable contributors include New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and veteran CBS anchor Jim Nantz. Interestingly, Jim Harbaugh, who was the Ravens’ head coach at the time, donated $2,500 to Feely’s campaign last fall, while the Bidwill family, owners of the Cardinals, chipped in a total of $17,000 through individual contributions.

Feely emphasized that the backing he has received, even from those outside the political sphere, speaks volumes about his character and the connections he’s built. He reflected on his NFL career, mentioning relationships with figures who, despite differing opinions, support him: “It’s been an honor for me…” he remarked.

His political views extend to college sports as well, calling for tighter regulations on NIL should he win a seat. According to a press release from the National Republican Congressional Committee, Feely’s campaign raised $740,000 in the first quarter of this year, totaling around $1.25 million by the end of March.

As the primary election nears, on July 21st, Feely will be facing opponents Joseph Czaplik, a former Arizona House Representative, and John Trobaugh, a technology executive. It’s a race to watch, especially given Feely’s unique transition from a sports career to a political one.

Feely’s story is a reminder that journeys can take unexpected turns, and who knows what might happen next?
