Jay Leno believes today's comedy cannot keep up with our 'outrageous' society.

Comedian Jay Leno discussed the current state of comedy in a recent interview, noting how it’s been influenced by the chaotic atmosphere of modern society, particularly during Donald Trump’s presidency. He remarked that some believe missing out on Trump as president means something was lost, but he disagrees, emphasizing that the humor was too easy, like, well, shooting fish in a barrel. In his conversation with Maria Shriver on her podcast “Life Above the Noise,” he explained that jokes often hit on absurd contrasts, like how the president interacts with strippers.

Shriver inquired whether Leno felt envy over the current late-night landscape or relief in not being part of it. He expressed skepticism, suggesting that the nature of comedy today doesn’t leave much room for outrageousness. According to him, comedy generally stems from a place of certain moral values, and today, those boundaries seem blurred.

Leno shared a personal story from a performance in prison where a joke took an unexpected turn. The audience reacted to a line where he pretended to flirt with a girl, and someone shouted an aggressive remark. This led to laughter as he acknowledged the stark cultural differences between prison life and what he usually encounters.

Shriver pointed out that the topics once considered off-limits have now become everyday reality. Leno agreed, saying that working with cleaner material is more challenging. It requires creative thought, which can push the boundaries of comedy in a fresh direction. He emphasized that it’s now essential to cater to varied audience interests.

Leno also mentioned that he’s taken politics out of his stand-up routine, which has significantly improved his ticket sales. Many people, he noted, don’t come to shows to hear political commentary—they just want to enjoy a good laugh. In a previous interview, he stated that this shift has led to a noticeable increase in his audience turnout. He acknowledged that while comics can explore political themes on their shows, they often moderate those during live tours, especially in less liberal areas.
