Jayapal Critiques Trump Administration’s ICE Actions
Representative Pramila Jayapal from Washington State has spoken out against the Trump administration, following a ProPublica investigation revealing that over 170 Americans were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents this year.
Jayapal, who serves as the leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, expressed her shock on a social media platform, stating, “This report is absolutely shocking. ICE does not have the authority to detain U.S. citizens for immigration purposes. That is a complete stop.”
She went on to declare that the Trump administration is “out of control” and infringing on the rights of American citizens, insisting that there must be accountability.
The ProPublica report, released on Thursday, highlighted several cases where citizens were detained by ICE during operations or demonstrations. Approximately 130 U.S. citizens were arrested, with nearly 20 held for more than a day without the opportunity to contact a lawyer or family.
Among the distressing findings were at least three cases of pregnant individuals being detained, alongside reports of civilians facing violence from police, including being shot, tasered, or physically harmed.
ICE is permitted to arrest U.S. citizens who obstruct or attack officers. The investigation detailed 130 instances where citizens faced such accusations, though in nearly 50 of those cases, the charges didn’t lead to prosecution or were dismissed.
Since his inauguration, President Trump has notably raised the budget for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, to enhance deportation efforts and border security.
Jayapal has consistently criticized the aggressive immigration policies of the Trump administration. She previously introduced a bill aimed at ensuring that ICE would “formally prevent” the detention or deportation of U.S. citizens.
“ICE is acting like a rogue force, kidnapping people and disappearing from the streets without due process,” she emphasized during a release announcing her bill. Jayapal concluded by stating, “Congress must act to make it abundantly clear, without any gray area, that ICE cannot do this, and to ensure that officers who act outside their authority are held accountable.”
