Jayapal Claims DHS Arrests Targeting Non-Threatening Individuals
Representative Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat from Washington, stated on Tuesday that, for the first time this summer, most individuals arrested by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “pose absolutely no threat to public safety.”
During a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing that discussed immigration enforcement, Jayapal expressed concern that the Trump administration has increasingly directed immigration enforcement efforts toward immigrants who do not have criminal convictions or outstanding charges, rather than focusing on those with criminal histories.
“For the first time this summer, the majority of people that DHS arrested were people who pose absolutely no threat to public safety, and the number of individuals with criminal convictions arrested by ICE actually decreased — decreased, not increased,” Jayapal emphasized.
She also claimed that the enforcement priorities of the administration are making communities “less safe.” She pointed out that when DHS focuses its efforts on parents and longtime residents, instead of pursuing serious crimes such as human trafficking, it creates vulnerability in those communities.
Her statements mirrored previous claims made by her office in a press release dated September 1, which stated that ICE data indicated “the majority of people they arrest have zero criminal charges or convictions,” noting a significant increase in arrests of individuals without criminal backgrounds—reported to be a 770% rise.
Independent evaluations of ICE data supported her assertions, showing that while total arrests by ICE hit record levels over the summer, the proportion of those arrested without criminal convictions or charges also increased.
These comments come as the Trump administration promotes its record on immigration enforcement, touting high numbers in arrests.
According to DHS, nearly 51,000 undocumented immigrants were apprehended nationwide in August, marking the highest monthly total on record. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that “the hard-working men and women of DHS continue to break records as they defend the homeland and protect the American people.” He also reiterated that for the third consecutive month, ICE has achieved a new record for arrests.
DHS’s emphasis included the arrests of undocumented individuals convicted of serious crimes, like murder and sexual assault.
As debates continue, I think it’s worth considering how these enforcement actions impact the fabric of communities—certainly a complex issue. But it seems clear that there are different narratives and outcomes being discussed.
More than 3 million undocumented immigrants have reportedly exited the United States since Trump assumed office again. At this time, representatives from both DHS and Jayapal’s office were unavailable for immediate comment.
