Jazz Chisholm shines with powerful performance as Yankees defeat Red Sox at last

Yankees Avoid Sweep Against Red Sox

The Yankees managed to save face recently.

Yet, they still need to show they can actually beat the Red Sox when it counts.

On Sunday night, they ended an eight-game losing streak against the Red Sox, pulling off a 7-2 victory to avoid a damaging four-game sweep at home.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run homer, and Trent Grisham contributed with a solo shot, bringing the Yankees (70-60) within half a game of the Red Sox (71-60) for the final wild card spot.

This win was particularly significant, as it prevented the Yankees from being swept at home by the Red Sox for the first time since 1939.

During the game, the Yankees put up five runs against Red Sox right-hander Dustin May, including Chisholm’s second two-run home run in the eighth inning.

Looking ahead, the Yankees will face the struggling White Sox starting Monday, before they meet the Red Sox again at Fenway Park after a tough run against the Astros, Blue Jays, and Tigers.

Carlos Rodon pitched decently, allowing two runs on just one hit over 5⅔ innings, but he walked five batters. It was a little messy, with Rodon loading the bases twice before Luke Weaver came in to limit the damage.

Weaver managed to face Jaren Duran without allowing any further runs, pitching seven scoreless innings in a solid relief effort.

In the eighth inning, Devin Williams faced the heart of the Red Sox lineup, retiring them in order.

Chisholm’s two-run shot in the second inning boosted the Yankees to a 2-0 lead. This marked Chisholm’s 100th career home run and his 23rd of the season, a notable improvement from last year.

Grisham was particularly effective, hitting a 406-foot homer and following it up with another 413-footer. This was his second two-homer game in the last five matches, bringing his season total to 25. He walked twice and reached base all four times he appeared at the plate, which is impressive for someone stepping up in a key role for the Yankees.

Although Aaron Judge wasn’t fully ready to return, he contributed with a powerful double during the game, helping the Yankees build their lead before scoring on a sacrifice fly from José Caballero, who stepped in at shortstop for Anthony Volpe.
