Jazz Chisholm Jr. had quite the experience during three innings on Sunday, and it didn’t quite go as planned.
Chisholm was wearing a microphone for an in-game interview with ESPN’s broadcast team when chaos ensued.
A ground ball rolled toward third base from Ceddanne Rafaela, pulling Chisholm away from his conversation. He managed to make a decent play on the ball, but his spinning throw to first base was off-target, allowing Rafaela to advance to second.
“Damn!” Chisholm exclaimed after realizing his throw was inaccurate.
During Sunday Night Baseball, ESPN often interviews players on the field, a practice that hasn’t been well-received by all fans.
Even though the play wasn’t straightforward—even without the microphone—Chisholm’s blunder certainly intensified the mood during the mid-game segment.
“That was a tough play,” the commentator told him after the miscue.
“Yeah, I’m alright,” Chisholm replied, seemingly unbothered.
Fortunately for Chisholm and the Yankees, the Red Sox left Rafaela stranded after a groundout, followed by a strikeout that got New York through the inning unscathed.
In 2023, players have reported earning up to $10,000 for participating in these on-field interviews.
Chisholm, known for his vibrant personality, seemed to fit right into the impromptu setting, finishing the game with three hits, including a walk and a sack fly.
“I’m just going to play at 70%,” he explained after coming back from a challenging phase. “Focus on my attack and defense—don’t overthink it.”
In the end, the Yankees fell 11-7, allowing the Red Sox to take two out of three in the weekend series.
