Mitch McConnell opposed Trump’s nominee and was previously the policy director for the Department of Defense, Elbridge Colby.

Colby received confirmation with a 54-45 vote.

Reported by The Hill:

On Tuesday, former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) voted against Elbridge Colby, who was proposed to serve under the Pentagon’s policy secretary, expressing concerns about “geographical strategic self-harm” if the US continues down Colby’s suggested priorities.

McConnell is wary of Colby’s previous remarks that the US should redirect its national security attention from Europe and the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific.

“The prioritization Colby proposes is being presented as something new and necessary, yet it reflects an Obama-era approach to geographic strategy. Neglecting Ukraine and Europe and dismissing the Middle East to focus on the Indo-Pacific is not a tactical innovation.”

“It’s strategic self-harm that emboldens our adversaries and creates divisions between America and its allies,” he stated.

JD Vance criticized McConnell for his vote against Colby, stating, “Mitch’s vote today…this is one of the most significant acts of political pettiness I have witnessed.”

As reported by Fox News:

Vice President JD Vance voiced strong opposition against Sen. Mitch McConnell R-Ky. for his vote against confirming Elbridge Colby as the defense secretary for policy.

“Mitch’s vote today is truly one of the most significant acts of political pettiness I’ve ever observed, reminiscent of many moments from his recent career,” Vance stated in a post on X.

Mitch McConnell is Reno.
