Vice President Vance to Announce Medicaid Fund Withholding
WASHINGTON – On Wednesday afternoon, Vice President J.D. Vance is set to reveal that $259.5 million in Medicaid funds for Minnesota will not be reimbursed while an investigation is underway. Additionally, there will be a nationwide pause on businesses seeking Medicare subsidies for durable medical equipment like canes and walkers.
Vance will be joined by Dr. Mehmet Oz, the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. This announcement comes just a day after President Trump discussed a “war on fraud” during his State of the Union address, with Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also scheduled to speak.
The significant withholding of funds is impacting nearly half of the recent claims submitted to the state’s low-income Medicaid program.
This “deferral” targets 14 programs that Minnesota has flagged as particularly susceptible to fraud, such as autism services, home rehabilitation, non-emergency medical transportation, and night supervision—some of which have been associated with major fraud cases in the Twin Cities.
Officials have stated that the Medicaid funds will remain on hold until further investigations into potential fraudulent claims are completed.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced plans to curb future spending across all states. The announcements made on Wednesday affect reimbursements that have already been submitted, following the suspension of various social assistance funds by five Democratic-led states, including Minnesota and New York.
Moreover, a new policy regarding durable medical equipment will prevent new companies from enrolling in the Medicare for the Elderly reimbursement system.
Officials revealed last year that there was a 20% error rate—or around $1.5 billion—in durable medical equipment fees, with about $1 billion suspected to be fraudulent.
The goal of halting new registrations is to closely examine existing companies and root out those engaging in fraudulent practices.
While Minnesota’s Medicaid issues are unfolding, concerns regarding Medicare equipment fees have predominantly been reported in Republican-led states, with a noteworthy number of fraud allegations surfacing in South Florida and Harris County, Texas, as mentioned by officials.
During his State of the Union address, President Trump emphasized that Vice President Vance would spearhead a nationwide initiative to combat abuses in government programs.
Trump stated, “I’m officially announcing the fight against fraud, led by our great vice president, J.D. Vance,” further predicting, “In fact, we’re going to get a balanced budget overnight. It’s going to happen very quickly. That’s the kind of money you’re talking about.”
