Immigration and Housing Prices: Vance’s Perspective
This week, Vice President J.D. Vance asserted that a primary focus of the Trump administration—curbing illegal immigration—has actually contributed to decreasing home prices in the U.S. He emphasized this point, noting how the surge of illegal immigration during President Biden’s first term had a contrary effect on housing costs.
“From day one, President Trump and I have emphasized that reducing illegal immigration will lead to lower housing prices, making homes more affordable for young Americans starting families,” Vance remarked. He referenced a recent Federal Reserve study indicating that the influx of illegal immigrants has played a role in driving up home prices and rents. He called out the narrative upheld by the media as misguided.
In his comments, Vance maintained, “Despite what some on the left say, Trump was right all along. The steps taken by the Department of Homeland Security and the broader Trump administration have begun to stem the tide of migrants at the border, and we’re witnessing a decline in home prices.” There’s certainly more to be done, but Vance believes this is a promising move toward making the American Dream more attainable for the nation’s youth.
A study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas described an “unprecedented boom” in illegal immigration from 2021 to 2024. The report provided a detailed look at how this surge affected labor and housing markets. It found that the influx of unauthorized immigrant workers tended to increase local employment almost on par with the number of workers, without causing a significant drop in local wages.
The research noted that this influx led to heightened home prices and rents, largely because housing supply couldn’t keep pace with demand. It outlined that for every 1% increase in local employment due to undocumented workers, home prices rose by about 2.2%, while rents increased by roughly 1.4%.
Put simply, the report suggested that undocumented immigrant labor accounted for around 30% of the total rise in housing prices and 20% of rent increases during these boom periods across local markets.
Yet, despite these findings, mainstream media has been scrutinizing Vance’s claims, which he has consistently made in debates and discussions. He highlighted these challenges during a recent debate against Governor Tim Walz, even amidst pushback from both the moderator and the governor.
A spokesperson for Vance stated, “The Vice President’s attempts at fact-checking demonstrate that mainstream media often serves as a left-wing propaganda tool.” They went on to assert that, despite media efforts to downplay the effects of left-leaning policies on American lives, the Trump administration remains dedicated to helping people afford homes in their own country.
