Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said Sunday that the United States should focus more on itself and its closest allies like Israel, rather than increasing aid to Ukraine.
Vance opposes sending additional aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia, writing: New York Times editorial On Friday, he said he believed it was impossible for Ukraine to win and that providing more funding to countries facing conflict would not change the outcome of the war. He told CNN’s “State of the Union” that the U.S. needs to focus instead on rebuilding its industrial base.
“Well, I think foreign policy should serve as a wake-up call, not a nursery rhyme, but it should serve as a wake-up call that we have to rebuild our own industrial base,” he said.
“Let’s take another weapon system that is really important. Last night, the Patriot interceptor system almost certainly saved the lives of many Israelis. The Ukrainians want it thousands of times a year. Do you know how many Jakes we make a year? 550,” he added.
He said the United States does not have the capacity to support Israel, Ukraine, or his own country.
“That can’t happen. I’ve been repeating this for years. It’s impossible for us to support Ukraine and Israel and our own defense needs in the way they demand.” ” he said, adding that the United States should focus on supporting Israel because it is a close ally with many of the United States’ national security interests.
He said approving requests for additional aid to Israel and Ukraine would actually harm Israel.
“But if we pass the Ukraine-Israel supplementary bill and send large quantities of weapons to Ukraine that the Israelis need, we are actually weakening Israel in the name of helping them. That makes no sense,” he said.
