J.D. Vance, a freshman Republican senator from Ohio and now President Donald Trump’s running mate, visited the southern border on Thursday to criticize Kamala Harris for failing as a border agent to stop illegal immigrants and deadly drugs like fentanyl from entering the United States.
Vance, dressed in jeans, boots and a plaid shirt, was seen in southern ArizonaSmuggler’s Paradise“He spoke about the border ‘crisis’ under Kamala Harris’ administration.”
“They are begging the president and vice president of the United States for leadership, but their own border chiefs are ignoring them.”
“They stopped deportations on day one. They stopped construction of the border wall on day one.” Vance argued..
As he did in his speech at the Republican National Convention last month, Vance made the border issue personal, again speaking about his mother’s struggles with substance abuse. He recalled an incident from his childhood when he prayed fervently that Jesus would help his mother “wake up” after what he thought was an overdose.
“Unfortunately, a lot of prayers are not being answered because of the poison that Kamala Harris has brought into this country. There are a lot of parents who are not going to wake up because when you take fentanyl, you don’t wake up,” he explained.
Vance said that despite the problems at the border, the solutions were simple: deport illegal immigrants, process asylum seekers in Mexico, end the capture-and-release system and build the wall.
“If people can come into this country and know they will never be deported, then we effectively have an open border,” Vance argued. “That’s what Kamala Harris promised and that’s what Kamala Harris has delivered.”
“This isn’t rocket science.”
Vance also said that many Border Patrol OfficerLawmakers, including current National Border Patrol Council Chairman Paul Perez and former council chairman Brandon Judd, have repeatedly pleaded with Harris for help but have been ignored.
“They’re sending letters and making phone calls,” Vance argued. “They’re looking to the president and vice president of the United States for leadership, but their own border agents are ignoring them.”
Finally, Vance accused the media of spreading “lies” about Harris’ role as a border agent: “It’s unbelievable what’s happening on the southern border, and it’s happening because Kamala Harris is refusing to do her job,” he said.
“The media needs to tell the truth and Kamala Harris needs to change course on this crazy border chaos.”
Harris has visited the southern border once since being appointed by President Joe Biden to be his administration’s border chief in March 2021. Her last visit to the southern border was in June 2021, after Lester Holt pressed Harris on the issue in an interview that later drew controversy for Harris’ poor performance, and after President Trump, who was no longer in office at the time, decided to host a town hall meeting near the border with Republican Governor Greg Abbott of Texas.
