Secret Service Employee Placed on Leave for Alleged Security Breach
A U.S. Secret Service (USSS) employee, responsible for the protection of Vice President J.D. Vance, has been put on leave following the release of undercover footage by journalist James O’Keefe. The video appears to show the agent sharing classified security information, prompting an investigation, as confirmed by the agency.
The Secret Service has suspended the involved personnel’s security clearances and revoked access to agency facilities and systems during this ongoing inquiry. This situation raises significant operational safety issues, and there are discussions about possibly instituting agency-wide retraining. “The U.S. Secret Service doesn’t tolerate actions that jeopardize the safety and trust of our protectees,” stated USSS Deputy Director Matthew Quinn. He emphasized that the personnel involved have been placed on administrative leave and had their access limited.
Quinn further mentioned that the agency has mandated all employees to undergo counter-espionage training, reinforcing the need for vigilance against individuals who might exploit agency personnel for sensitive information.
According to O’Keefe, the undercover video allegedly captures the agent discussing sensitive details such as protected formations, travel movements, and security procedures with someone he believed to be a romantic interest. O’Keefe indicated that there was also mention of providing real-time information and sending images while on duty.
Quinn issued a public apology to the Vance family for the breach of trust, stressing the agency’s long-standing tradition of discretion. “We will implement necessary measures to prevent similar violations in the future,” he concluded.
O’Keefe’s report suggested that the agents engaged in conversations about protective details and admitted to sharing sensitive information sometimes days in advance, despite signing documents prohibiting such disclosures.
It’s notable that O’Keefe characterized the involved agent as a “holdover from the Biden administration” with personal views critical of both ICE and the previous Trump administration. He indicated that his organization collaborated with the USSS before releasing the footage and made efforts to redact certain operational specifics at the agency’s request.
The USSS currently does not have a clear timeline for the investigation or whether it could result in criminal charges. The White House has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the issue.
