Jeanie Buss Thought LeBron James Wasn't 'Appreciative' of the Lakers Selecting Bronny

LeBron James’ NBA Aspirations and Family Dynamics

LeBron James has achieved numerous milestones throughout his NBA journey. Still, his most significant personal ambition has been to play alongside his son, Bronny, before he hangs up his sneakers.

In 2024, the Lakers fulfilled that dream by picking Bronny with the 55th overall choice in the NBA Draft. However, reports suggest that LeBron’s perceived lack of gratitude towards the Lakers for this move may have contributed to the Bass family’s desire to sell the team.

According to an in-depth article by ESPN’s Baxter Holmes, Jeannie Buss, the former controlling owner of the Lakers, held some resentment toward LeBron, feeling he didn’t fully appreciate the significance of drafting her son.

When Bronny was selected, sources revealed that Jeannie thought LeBron should have expressed gratitude for what she considered a meaningful gesture, despite him apparently feeling otherwise, as noted by Holmes.

The term “gesture” in Holmes’ reporting hints at how Jeannie viewed the decision to draft Bronny. Although he played just 25 games in college, largely due to serious health issues, some saw him as a potential successor to LeBron. However, his performance was modest, with averages of 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists.

Given those stats, one might speculate he wouldn’t have been drafted if he weren’t LeBron’s son. If Holmes’ account is accurate, it seems the Lakers felt they were honoring LeBron by selecting Bronny.

Jeannie Buss’ frustrations with LeBron seem to go beyond this specific situation. Interestingly, the report also mentions that she had considered trading LeBron to the Clippers a few years back.

As LeBron, now 41, approaches the end of his illustrious career, Bronny is just starting to find his footing in the NBA. So far, he has spent 165 minutes on the court across 24 games, averaging only 1.5 points per outing.
