Jeff Bezos buys $80M private jet that flies near speed of sound

Jeff Bezos has reportedly purchased his fourth private jet, and it’s for a whopping $80 million.

The billionaire Amazon founder last month purchased a Gulfstream G700, a luxury business jet manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace and considered one of the world’s largest and most advanced private jets. According to Business Insider.

The G700 is said to have a maximum range of about 7,500 nautical miles and can reach a top speed of Mach 0.925, or about 92.5 percent of the speed of sound, or about 710 miles per hour.

The G700 also features 20 panoramic windows and an “ultra-quiet cabin that is replenished with 100% fresh plasma-ionized air every two to three minutes.”

Last Sunday, the G700 took off from Ibiza.

Around the same time, Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, were photographed on an island near the tycoon’s $500 million superyacht.

According to publicly available flight data, Bezos’ plane made 28 flights over 39 days, leaving behind 264 tons of carbon dioxide emissions — 17 times the amount emitted by the average American in a year.

Bezos appears to have sought to keep the acquisition out of the public eye by taking advantage of a Federal Aviation Administration program that allows jet owners to keep information about their aircraft private.

The FAA Privacy ICAO Aircraft Address (PIA) program allows aircraft owners to use a temporary, random address that changes the aircraft’s identification number, making it harder for the public to track the flight.

News of Bezos’ latest purchase was also posted by Jack Sweeney, a Florida-based college student who drew the ire of Elon Musk and Taylor Swift by publishing flight-tracking data for their private jets on his social media accounts.

The Washington Post has reached out to Amazon, where Bezos still sits on the company’s board of directors, for comment. He stepped down as CEO in July 2021.

Current boss Andy Jassy succeeded him.

Bezos is also said to own a Gulfstream G650, the predecessor to the G700, and a Pilatus PC-24.

As of Wednesday, Bezos’ net worth was Bloomberg Billionaires Index Rating His net worth is estimated at $203 billion, making him the second-richest person in the world after Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Last March, it was reported that Goldman Sachs had abandoned plans to buy a G700 with a private shower as part of a cost-cutting measure.
