Chris Paul’s Unexpected Departure from Clippers
There was quite a stir leading up to Chris Paul’s surprising split from the Los Angeles Clippers.
Allegedly, assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy confronted Paul on a plane just days prior to the point guard’s dismissal. Reportedly, this happened after Paul was called out for being too “loose” during a game. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Van Gundy felt that Paul had interfered with coaching decisions during a November 29 loss to Dallas.
“I heard that Jeff Van Gundy told Chris Paul, ‘Listen, you might have had the luxury of changing the defensive coverage elsewhere, but you don’t have that luxury here,'” Haynes mentioned during an appearance on Prime NBA Broadcast. This interaction is said to be one of the few incidents in their brief time together on the team.
Paul’s release caught many off guard. At 3 a.m. ET on Wednesday, he indicated through an Instagram post that the team was sending him back to Los Angeles from Atlanta.
While Paul has had some of his peak years with the franchise, ESPN reported that the organization viewed him as “disruptive,” and head coach Tyronn Lue had reportedly stopped communicating with him.
Previously, Hayes noted that Paul had sought a meeting with Lue to discuss what many described as a “negative presence.” However, that meeting never materialized.
Despite being vocal about accountability among management, coaches, and teammates, Paul reportedly feared it could confuse the team dynamics. The ongoing tension between him and coaching staff adds context to Paul’s recent cryptic Instagram post.
Last week, he shared a definition of “leeway,” which was seen in light of the Clippers’ 114-110 loss to the Mavericks the day prior. With Kawhi Leonard playing limited minutes, he remained on the bench, struggling to guard Klay Thompson effectively as the game progressed.
During a timeout late in the game, Paul is said to have approached Leonard and inquired about his readiness to guard Thompson. He also suggested to his teammates that they might need to adjust their defensive matchups, advocating for a more aggressive approach with Leonard.
Even though the Clippers made some strategic changes, they continued to struggle and could not achieve a victory.
On the team’s flight to Miami for an upcoming game, Van Gundy reportedly initiated a discussion with Paul regarding the defensive shifts. Paul denied having changed any assignments, explaining he had merely suggested that another player might better handle Thompson for the time being.
Interestingly, Lue did not mention any conflict between him and Paul when discussing the recent player release. He acknowledged that things didn’t work out as anticipated, suggesting the fit wasn’t right for the future Hall of Famer.
“It didn’t work out the way we thought it would. I just don’t think it was a good fit for what he was looking for. It is what it is,” Lue stated.
He also expressed his disappointment, sharing his long-standing respect for Paul, stating he never wanted to see such a result. Despite averaging only 2.9 points in 16 games for the Clippers, questions linger regarding Paul’s future in the league. At 40, while he has yet to secure a championship, he may still pursue a title, with the Knicks potentially being a suitable option for him.
