Democrats Blame Republicans for Controversial Remarks by Texas Candidate
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic lawmakers are directing criticism at Republicans for the recent inflammatory comments made by Democratic congressional candidate Maureen Galindo, who has faced backlash for her remarks suggesting prison conditions for “American Zionists.” Jeffries stated that “MAGA extremists should be ashamed,” following Galindo’s provocative statements that ignited a fierce debate.
In a joint statement, Jeffries alongside the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), urged House Republican leaders to halt support for Galindo, labeling her as an anti-Semitic candidate. They insisted that her “vile words” have no place in American politics, particularly not within the Democratic Party itself.
“It is unacceptable to support a candidate whose rhetoric is not just fringe but dangerous,” they emphasized, condemning efforts to back such comments in the pursuit of electoral gains.
Interestingly, Galindo, who is currently in a primary runoff for a spot in the Texas state legislature, attracted criticism for her suggestion on social media to transform local ICE facilities into “prisons for American Zionists,” adding, rather controversially, it would also serve as a “castration center for pedophiles,” remarking that a significant number of Zionists may fall into that category.
Earlier this month, the DCCC alleged that “Washington Republicans” might be covertly funding her campaign through untraceable donations. Galindo is set to compete against her primary rival, Johnny Garcia, who has the DCCC’s endorsement, in a runoff election next week. In their initial encounter, Galindo secured a slim lead, capturing 29% of the votes to Garcia’s 27%, but neither achieved the needed 50% for outright victory.
Jeffries and the DCCC’s sentiments echoed broader frustrations, with Ocasio-Cortez describing Galindo’s commentary as “absolutely disgusting.” She took to social media to declare that such expressions of bigotry should be entirely absent from politics.
On the Republican side, Rep. Elise Stefanik expressed that she was “rarely shocked,” yet referred to Galindo’s statements as “truly shocking” and called for a unified condemnation from all elected Democrats.
Moreover, Sen. Rick Scott condemned the notion of any candidates promoting the establishment of “Jewish concentration camps” in America, characterizing such ideas as “beyond despicable.”
On a different note, some Democrats criticized Republicans for allegedly backing progressive candidates like Galindo. Rep. Christian Menefee voiced his disgust over the anti-Semitic remarks from Texas Democrats, asserting that Galindo “doesn’t belong in our party or Congress.”
In response to the furor, state Rep. James Talarico, a prominent Democratic candidate in the upcoming elections, stated the need for leaders from both parties to denounce hate in all forms. “This anti-Semitic rhetoric has no place in our politics,” Talarico affirmed.
Fox News Digital has sought a response from Galindo regarding this unfolding situation.
