Jeffries Hesitant to Support Mamdani’s Mayoral Bid
House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries has stated that he is, as of now, not ready to back Zohran Mamdani in his campaign for mayor of New York City. During a press conference on Capitol Hill, Jeffries mentioned that he’s still weighing his options regarding the endorsement.
Mamdani, who identifies as a socialist, has garnered significant criticism from Republicans since winning the Democratic nomination. Jeffries remarked that they would reunite with other Brooklyn delegation members and prominent community figures upon Mamdani’s return to the country.
The candidate met with Jeffries in Brooklyn on Friday and has actively sought support from New York’s leading Democrats.
Jeffries elaborated, saying, “I’ll have a sit-in conversation and then take it from there, as it applies to all the famous approval decisions I’ve made in the past.”
Mamdani recently told reporters that he had left for a trip to Uganda, where he was celebrating his marriage with family. He jokingly mentioned that his trip would likely make headlines in a New York newspaper, offering some playful suggestions for potential articles.
In a humorous twist, he referenced various tabloid-style headlines like “Mia Mandani in Africa,” and “Uganda Miss Me,” poking fun at his situation. He even shared a video where he whimsically titled it “ZoRunning Away?” before waving to the camera.
Born in Uganda and raised in South Africa until moving to New York City at the age of seven, Mamdani holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Uganda. He also reportedly owns four acres of undeveloped land in Jinja, Uganda.
