Jelly Roll Faces Tough Times on Tour
During his Australian tour, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason Bradley Deford, opened up about hitting a low point in his life, feeling particularly isolated thousands of miles from his family. In a recent episode of “No Filter with Kate Langbroch,” the 40-year-old country star shared how the challenges of long-distance travel took a toll on him.
“I’m falling apart. It’s been a terrible week. I’m in the worst mental state I’ve been in for a while,” Jelly Roll admitted, expressing just how difficult the experience has been for him.
“I’m really far from home. I’m anxious and shocked by how alone I feel… I just want to go home because it’s not fun.” The artist performed six shows in Australia from October 25 to November 4, marking his first time performing in the country, and had plans for a final show in Auckland on November 8.
Unfortunately, he canceled that Auckland show last minute due to illness, which is quite rare for him.
On the podcast, he attributed his mental struggle to various health issues, noting that they all seemed to cascade from one another, exacerbated by his hectic travel schedule.
“When your stomach is off, everything goes off. Your mind isn’t clear,” he explained, revealing he had been dealing with ongoing gastrointestinal troubles. This, of course, made everything feel more complicated.
Additionally, he mentioned that the logistics of touring—especially with fewer tour buses available—added to his sense of isolation. “I have to be very isolated, and I don’t like that,” he said. Spending lots of time alone in hotel rooms really affected him. “I miss my family so much.”
He has been practicing breathing exercises to firm up his mental state yet couldn’t shake the strong desire to be back in Tennessee. “Everybody wants to go home when they’re sick. It’s just in us,” he remarked, highlighting that innate longing to find comfort when feeling unwell.
Adding to his troubles, Jelly Roll recounted an unpleasant experience while shopping at a Louis Vuitton store in Sydney, where employees treated him suspiciously, making him feel like he was being looked at like a criminal. “I’ve never been treated like this,” he said of the encounter, remembering feeling particularly judged during that time.
Jelly Roll has openly discussed his challenging past, including legal troubles and struggles with addiction. He had his first major brush with the law as a teen, facing serious charges that led to over a year in prison.
