Generational Divide in Phone Communication

During a recent episode of Today, Jenna Bush Hager humorously confronted guest host Donna Farizan about their calling habits after Farizan missed a call a few days prior to the show.

The conversation, which was part of a pre-recorded segment aired on August 28, centered around the noticeable differences between Millennials and Gen Z in their preferences for phone conversations. Bush Hager seemed a bit frustrated with these trends and felt compelled to issue a sort of public service announcement for younger viewers.

“It’s definitely a generational thing,” commented Farizan, who is roughly a decade younger than Bush Hager. “Sometimes I just don’t like talking on the phone.”

In response, Bush Hager pointed out, “The other day I called you, and you didn’t answer,” prompting laughter from the crew in the studio. “It’s true,” she added, emphasizing the reality of the situation.

Farizan, trying to defend herself, quickly mentioned, “But we sent a text!”

Bush Hager playfully imitated, “But then we texted. Yeah, it’s not the same.” She urged younger viewers to consider picking up the phone more often and talking to someone directly.

With a playful tone, Bush Hager continued, “I need to share a little poem. Where’s my camera?” She directed her remarks towards the audience, suggesting that it’s common for people of a certain age to wonder why someone hasn’t replied after sending a text or an email. “It shouldn’t only be in emails or texts,” she said.

Farizan agreed that there was some truth to this debate, although she insisted, “I do enjoy talking to you on the phone.” However, Bush Hager was relentless in reminding her of the missed call a few days earlier before hosting Today with Jenna and Friends.

“You’re fine with it when it’s me calling, but when my name pops up, you seem hesitant,” Bush Hager remarked. “After you silenced my call, I texted you, ‘I’ll call you in a few days,’ so I know you’ll probably text back.”

The show Today with Jenna and Friends is set to air weekdays on NBC starting October 9th.
