Jennifer Lawrence Reflects on Leaving Hollywood
Jennifer Lawrence recently shared her thoughts on Hollywood during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, where she promoted her new film, Die My Love. Accompanied by co-stars Jeremy Allen White, Bruce Springsteen, and Tessa Thompson, she discussed her fluctuating relationship with the film industry.
During the show, Norton asked Lawrence if she ever thought about stepping back from acting after taking multiple breaks in recent years. She had a two-year hiatus between the release of “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” in 2019 and “Don’t Look Up” in 2021, followed by another gap before her latest comedies. In her response, she candidly expressed that while she was somewhat at peace with the idea of leaving Hollywood, it would still be quite upsetting.
Lawrence humorously mentioned the pandemic, saying, “I caused the coronavirus,” referring to how she wanted a break just as the world was shutting down. She also noted that after years of constant work, she began to wonder what life could be like outside of acting. In hindsight, she admitted that she felt she hadn’t been showing her true self during that chaotic period.
She reflected on that time, explaining, “I think people were tired of me. I was tired of it too.” It reached a point where she felt like anything she did would be scrutinized. Before taking a break, her projects had not performed well, which contributed to her feelings of frustration and the desire to please others.
Lawrence elaborated, sharing that much of her life had been about satisfying others’ expectations. “When I was working, I felt like no one could be mad at me,” she said, adding that she eventually found that simply existing didn’t bring her happiness anymore. This realization prompted her to seek a more fulfilling life outside her career.
In 2019, she married art gallerist Cooke Maroney, a decision she views positively, describing how she enjoys their mundane activities together, like grocery shopping. “It’s almost like a marriage metaphor,” she said, illustrating their teamwork and shared responsibilities.
In 2022, Lawrence and Maroney welcomed their first child, a son named Cy, and they reportedly had a second child earlier this year but chose not to disclose details about the new arrival.
