Jennifer Newsom Critiques Trump After Interview Fallout
On Monday, Jennifer Newsom expressed strong criticism of Donald Trump during a segment on “60 Minutes,” following a recent assassination attempt.
After Trump’s interview with CBS’s Norah O’Donnell, Newsom was visibly upset upon reading excerpts from the shooter’s manifesto.
During the interview, O’Donnell hesitated as she read the gunman’s disturbing references to “pedophiles” and “rapists,” looking taken aback when Trump prompted her to say it aloud.
In response, Trump labeled her a “disgrace” for repeating those words and contemplated canceling the interview, which is scheduled to air on Sunday night.
Newsom quickly came to O’Donnell’s defense, aiming to frame the incident as part of a larger misogynistic struggle.
“My family and I watched the 60 Minutes interview with Donald Trump and Norah O’Donnell, and we were shocked,” she shared on social media.
“It’s concerning to see the president interact with female journalists in such a dismissive manner, which isn’t surprising given his established behavior.”
She went on to criticize Trump for “normalizing aggression against women and girls,” suggesting that this creates a culture that fosters internalized misogyny.
Just hours after a gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Trump sat down with O’Donnell to discuss the tragic event. However, the conversation quickly shifted when the suspect’s manifesto was brought up.
“To quote him, he wrote that government officials are the targets and stated: I will no longer allow pedophiles, rapists, and traitors to cover their crimes on my hands. What is your response to that?” O’Donnell pressed, directing the question at Trump.
“I was waiting for you to read it because I knew you would read it, because you’re terrible people,” Trump retorted.
O’Donnell attempted to clarify that she was merely quoting the gunman’s alleged words, but Trump called her a “disgrace.” He added, “I’m not a rapist. I’ve never raped anyone. You shouldn’t be reading that on 60 Minutes. It’s shameful.”
In her response, Newsom defended O’Donnell and acknowledged “all women journalists and, frankly, everyone who bravely speaks truth to power.”
She concluded with, “This culture of misogyny affects us all, and it needs to stop.”
