Federal Prosecutor Challenges Governor on Voter Fraud Claims
In a recent exchange, the U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, Bill Esseri, has urged Governor Gavin Newsom to provide proof that voter fraud is not a concern in California. This comes after Newsom criticized President Trump’s assertions of widespread fraud, labeling them as “false and misleading.” Esseri responded, stating, “Prove it,” and suggested opening the voter rolls for an audit, questioning, “What do we have to hide?”
Esseri has previously indicated that he is collaborating with Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Harmeet Dhillon, to perform a detailed review of California’s voter registration records. A source has claimed that an upcoming Department of Homeland Security report will highlight at least 278,000 noncitizens registered to vote in federal elections, marking the highest publicized number in U.S. history. However, it’s still uncertain how this might translate into illegal voting and the government’s response.
President Trump has alleged that China compromised the voter registration data of 220 million Americans, describing it as a significant breach of voter security. He stated that this breach, over several years, involved the People’s Republic of China acquiring sensitive data linked to voter files, which could enable various fraudulent activities.
Following Trump’s remarks, Newsom dismissed the president’s claims as the ramblings of an “old man” regarding an election that was lost. He emphasized that the threat to democracy comes not just from external factors but internally, urging citizens not to give in to cynicism or silence, and to continue voting diligently.
The investigation into voter fraud has become a focus for the Trump administration. Recently, federal agents targeted Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles, following allegations that homeless individuals were being incentivized to vote in the June 2 primary. This operation represents a significant step in the federal inquiry, with FBI Director Kash Patel reinforcing the bureau’s determination to secure elections, asserting, “If you mess with our elections, we will find you!”
