Jennifer Welch claims Newsom is committing 'political suicide' with his moderate remarks

Political Tensions Over Cultural Issues

Jennifer Welch, host of the podcast “I’ve Had It,” called out California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, claiming he is committing “political suicide.” This comes after Newsom suggested that Democrats need to “become more culturally normal” in order to secure elections.

Welch’s remarks followed Newsom’s recent CNN interview in which he emphasized the importance of focusing on affordability over niche cultural topics. In his words, “From a tactical standpoint, from a purely political standpoint, there’s no question that the Democratic Party needs to be, dare I say it, more culturally normal.” He mentioned that he’s shifting his focus away from issues like pronouns and identity politics toward more pressing matters such as rising costs associated with electricity, childcare, medical bills, and housing.

Welch wasn’t shy in her criticism. She felt Newsom’s attempts to moderate his stance might be seen as a retreat to Republicans—a “concession.” She stated, “Governor Newsom, what you are saying is breathtakingly dangerous. You’re allowing their narrative to define Americans, which is shameful.”

Moreover, she expressed concerns regarding Newsom’s apparent alignment with “corporate Democrats” and how that affects his political trajectory. “He’s adamantly opposed to the billionaire tax, yet I think supporting it is a no-brainer,” she said. Welch highlighted politicians like New York City’s Mayor Zoran Mamdani as examples of success under a progressive approach.

In her eyes, Newsom’s current path is troubling. “This is just incredibly unfortunate. You don’t need to throw anyone under the bus,” she concluded, labeling his shift as political suicide.

Despite facing backlash from his party over his moderate stance on transgender issues, Newsom maintains that he is still a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. So, it remains to be seen how this all plays out as tensions continue within the Democratic Party.
