Rep. Nadler Criticizes ICE Amid Rising Tensions
On Tuesday, Representative Jerry Nadler from New York described U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as “rogues,” arguing that it’s “justified” to resort to violence against those who verbally abuse during hearings.
ICE has faced increasing scrutiny following the shooting deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis and St. Paul earlier this year. Good was involved with groups that aim to disrupt immigration operations. Nadler expressed his views while appearing before the House Judiciary Committee, discussing legislation that prohibits biological males from competing in women’s sports, and labeling “fascism in the streets” as a “major problem” in the nation.
“The real issue today is that we see fascism on the streets,” Nadler commented. He mentioned, “If someone attacked you while masked, you’d probably think you were being kidnapped, and you’d feel justified in defending yourself. But what are people being shot for? Just for driving their cars.”
“ICE is breaking into homes without warrants,” he continued. “They’re pulling out U.S. citizens in their underwear, not even letting them get dressed. That’s our big issue right now.”
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to inquiries regarding Nadler’s statements.
Footage captured by an ICE agent during the fatal shooting of Good appears to show him speeding towards the agent, disregarding commands, and reversing despite his girlfriend urging him to flee.
Recently, Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz condemned ICE as “Trump’s modern-day Gestapo” during a commencement speech. Similarly, Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett likened ICE to “slave patrols” on a podcast. In January, calls surfaced on TikTok advocating for violence against ICE officials.
According to Border czar Tom Homan, who spoke at a May 2025 press briefing, assaults on ICE agents are rising dramatically, with incidents of violence against agents increasing by 1,300% as of January 8. The Department of Homeland Security reported a staggering 3,200% rise in vehicular assaults and an 8,000% increase in death threats against personnel.
Violent confrontations related to ICE enforcement have occurred, with reports of shootings in Illinois and California. Between January 4th and January 10th, multiple incidents involved vehicles being used as weapons against ICE agents.
The Department of Homeland Security recently highlighted several violent attacks at an ICE facility in Illinois and noted that in Portland, Oregon, conservative journalists covering local protests faced assaults, including attempts to harm aircraft operated by federal law enforcement.
Moreover, a recent shooting at an ICE office in Dallas resulted in two casualties, with the shooter later taking his own life. In Texas, two incidents in July involved gunfire directed at ICE or police personnel.
