Jerry Seinfeld Pays Tribute to Rob Reiner
Jerry Seinfeld is honoring the memory of Rob Reiner, who, along with his wife Michelle, was found fatally attacked in their Brentwood, California home on Sunday.
On Monday, the 71-year-old comedian shared a photo on Instagram featuring Rob and his late father, Carl Reiner. He mentioned, “After Larry David and George Shapiro, Rob Reiner was the biggest influence on my career.”
David, 78, co-created “Seinfeld,” while Shapiro, who passed away in 2022, served as Seinfeld’s manager and the sitcom’s producer. Seinfeld noted, “Our show would never have happened without Rob.”
He elaborated, “He saw things that no one else saw. He was instrumental in saving us from cancellation when the network wasn’t fond of our early episodes.” Seinfeld reflected on his early career, saying, “It seemed incredible that I was working with the son of Carl Reiner, who was one of the kindest people in entertainment. I was perhaps a bit naive about how much Rob’s dedication to the show mattered.”
“Seinfeld” ran for nine seasons from 1989 to 1998 and was produced by Rob’s Castle Rock Entertainment. The series featured notable actors such as Michael Richards, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Jason Alexander.
Seinfeld continued, “Rob and Michelle got married as the show started, and they became an essential part of our journey. Their loss is incredibly sad.” In a 2016 interview, Rob discussed producing “Seinfeld,” admitting that he believed in the show despite its poor ratings early on.
Rob fought to keep the series alive after NBC considered canceling it. He vividly recounted his appeals, saying, “They said, ‘We can’t do this show, what is this show? It’s just people sitting around talking.'” He shared how he passionately urged the network to give the show a chance, asserting, “I promised there would be a story, and this would turn out to be one of the great shows I’ve ever seen.”
Robert, 78, and Michelle, 68, were discovered deceased by their daughter Romy, 28, the day after they attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas gathering. Witnesses reported a loud argument between Rob and his son Nick before they left the event.
Nick was taken into custody on Sunday and is currently under suicide watch at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, being held without bail. Reports suggest that Nick has struggled with substance abuse for many years and has faced behavioral issues since childhood.
According to those familiar with the family, Nick reportedly harbored resentment toward his father and felt inadequate regarding his own talents. Alana Zabel, a yoga instructor who worked with Rob and Michelle in the early 2000s, recalled how Nick would often disengage from activities and express frustration.
Alana advised the couple to confront Nick’s issues directly, highlighting the ongoing strain his behavior placed on the family. Sources mentioned that Nick’s relationship with his parents was fraught with challenges, noting their efforts to help him through various cycles of treatment.
Following the tragic deaths, the Reiner family issued a statement expressing their profound sorrow, asking for privacy during this difficult time. Tracy Reiner, Rob’s eldest daughter, also expressed her shock and heartbreak over the situation, reflecting on the strong family bonds they shared.
