Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka stops US Open match over alleged marijuana smell
Dr. Janette Nesheiwat delves into the health implications of marijuana usage following the incident where Aryna Sabalenka paused a U.S. Open match due to a suspected marijuana scent. She also explores patterns in marijuana and alcohol consumption, along with concerns regarding their health risks on ‘Fox Report.’
The current World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, edged closer to clinching her third consecutive U.S. Open title on Thursday, overpowering third-ranked Jessica Pegula with a score of 7-5, 6-2 in the women’s singles semifinal in New York.
Throughout the early stages, the match was fairly balanced, but Sabalenka kicked it up a notch toward the end of the first set. She exploited Pegula’s second serve and carried that energy into the second set, which saw her reach one of her best performances in the tournament.
“No complaints,” remarked the 28-year-old from Belarus after earning her spot in Saturday’s final. “I’m just super happy that I was able to pull out such tennis.”

Sabalenka is set to compete against the winner of the match between No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina and No. 4 seed Coco Gauff on Saturday. If she wins against either, she’d be the first woman since Serena Williams (2012-14) to take home three consecutive U.S. Open titles.
Next week, Rybakina will take over the top position in the women’s tennis rankings, but Sabalenka mentioned she wouldn’t mind stepping back from the No. 1 spot after having it for a while.
It could be quite challenging for her opponents to stop her if she plays like she did against Pegula.
Sabalenka hit an impressive 29 winners compared to Pegula’s 12, making this latest encounter in the U.S. Open between the two a one-sided affair, especially after their previous matchups had been closely contested.
“I was so desperate for the win, I wanted it badly,” Sabalenka expressed, emphasizing her determination.
She has notched up 19 consecutive victories at the U.S. Open since her loss to Gauff in the 2023 final.
