The Jets continue to find new ways to lose.
On Sunday, the Jets blew a 14-point lead and lost 26-21 to the Seahawks, their third straight loss and eighth in nine games.
This came despite the Seahawks making numerous special teams mistakes and getting stopped at the goal line. The Jets are currently 3-9 with a nine-game losing streak.
The Jets had a chance to regain the lead late in the game, but a pass from Seattle 34's Aaron Rodgers to Garrett Wilson fell incomplete in the end zone, giving the Jets another loss.
Former Jets quarterback Geno Smith didn't have a spectacular performance, but he did throw a touchdown pass to help the Seahawks come back from a 21-7 deficit. Another former Jet, Leonard Williams, had two sacks, one pick-six, and one extra point block.
Both teams made mistakes, giving their opponents a chance to win. The Jets committed 12 penalties, including massive offensive pass interference on Davante Adams, who negated a 41-yard pass in the fourth quarter. The game was then delayed and the Jets immediately punted.
After that, the defense continued the comedy of mistakes that led to Seattle's first goal. The Jets put 12 people on the field and went 4-and-1 on a fourth-and-6, when backup cornerback Quantez Stigers committed pass interference on a fourth-and-1, giving the Seahawks a first down and 20 yards.
The Seahawks met again with a 4-1 series lead, and it looked like the Jets were going to stop Zach Charbonnet for a first down, but Jets defensive tackle Solomon Thomas was called for a horse-collar tackle.
The Seahawks then turned a third-and-6 into a third-and-1 as Will McDonald lined up in the neutral zone. Charbonnet gained over 1 yard and rushed 8 yards before a touchdown, giving Seattle a 26-21 lead.
Both teams played an interesting and sometimes strange first half. The Jets went first when Rodgers connected with Adams for an 8-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked and the Jets held an early 6-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Seahawks returner Dee Williams fumbled after being attacked by Jets running back Kane Wang-Wu, who was promoted from the practice squad for this game. Brandin Echols recovered a fumble for the Jets against Seattle 27. Four plays later, Rodgers threw a shovel pass to rookie running back Isaiah Davis for a 4-yard touchdown. The Jets converted a two-point try and took a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter.
The Seahawks responded with a 10-play drive that ended with Smith throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end AJ Barner, cutting the Jets' lead to 14-7 early in the second quarter.
Nwanwu then continued his big day with a 99-yard kickoff return to put the Jets ahead 21-7. The Jets have struggled in return games all season, but they seem to have found something with Nwanwu's return.
Seattle's special teams woes continued on the ensuing kickoff. Laviska Shenault fumbled the kickoff and Jets kicker Anders Karlsson recovered the ball at the Seattle 38. The Jets moved the ball to the 9-yard line, but then Rodgers made two bad plays in a row. First, he missed a wide-open Garrett Wilson in the end zone on second down. His third-down pass was then tipped by Seahawks cornerback Devon Weatherspoon and intercepted by former Jet Leonard Williams, who ran it 92 yards for a touchdown. According to ESPN, it was the longest interception return for a touchdown by a defensive lineman in NFL history.
The Jets blocked Jason Myers' extra point attempt, and the lead remained at 21-13. Myers made a 54-yard field goal with 4:20 left in the first half.
Things calmed down a bit in the third quarter, but after two long throws to DK Metcalf and a pass interference penalty in the end zone by safety Chuck Clark, the Seahawks found themselves inside the Jets' 1-yard line. But the Seahawks couldn't nail it. Quincy Williams sacked Smith on fourth down, ending the threat and preserving the Jets' lead.
In a game that at times felt like both teams were trying to hand the victory to the other, Breece Hall fumbled it and the Seahawks recovered. Myers made a 43-yard field goal with 13:11 left in the game, giving the Seahawks a 21-19 lead.
