Patriots and Jets Gear Up for Showdown

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — They’re back, and that’s an understatement.

The classic line from “Poltergeist II: The Other Side” feels particularly relevant to the AFC East these days.

Just when you thought the Patriots were down for the count, they’ve bounced back, much like a horror movie villain. The Jets will face them this Thursday night at Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots boast an 8-2 record and are riding a seven-game winning streak.

New coach Mike Vrabel and second-year quarterback Drake Maye have breathed new life into the team. While they may not resemble the Super Bowl dynasty from the Belichick/Brady era, they’ve certainly become a force to reckon with again.

“This is going to be a battle,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn remarked. “It’s going to be a fight, but we welcome it. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Jets have struggled to capitalize on the Patriots’ previous downturn, which was a relatively brief gap between the dominant Belichick era and now. But things are looking different now.

Interestingly, Vrabel had discussions with the Jets regarding their head coaching position in January, just days before the Patriots decided to fire Jerrod Mayo. This opened the door for Vrabel’s hiring along with Glenn’s appointment at the Jets.

While Glenn faced some challenges in his inaugural season with the Jets, Vrabel made a striking impact with significant help from Maye.

“Vrabel’s influence on how this team is run is clear,” Glenn said. “He’s going to do a great job in the offseason to bring in top-notch players that align with his vision. Plus, the coaching staff he brought in is impressive.”

The Jets are currently aiming for their second consecutive win, which is noteworthy since they haven’t won three in a row since the 2023 season.

“Honestly, we’re just focused on winning, whether it’s one game or three. The more we win, the more our confidence grows, both individually and as a team. That’s what matters,” Glenn added.

Last week, the Jets pulled off a victory against the Browns, even after trading away key players like Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams.

“Credit goes to them. A lot of teams would be pointing fingers, thinking, ‘How can we win without one of the best defensive linemen?’ But that energy and excitement were evident. This game will definitely be a challenge, and I know they’re prepared as we continue our preparations,” Vrabel mentioned.
