Jets Evaluate Key Positions Ahead of Season

The Jets are currently exploring options at quarterback, receiver, and tight end, particularly focusing on Garrett Wilson’s position.

There seems to be this half-glass optimism about understanding why the team’s offense might exceed expectations this season.

The spotlight is on the guys up front, which is where the team’s foundation lies.

They’ve got three first-round picks—Alijah Vera-Tucker, Armand Membou, and Olu Fashanu—along with a second-rounder, Joe Tippmann, and seasoned player John Simpson. These five players, all between 21 and 27, could very well represent the best offensive line the Jets have had in the last decade.

“I was quite impressed with how they execute,” noted first-year coach Aaron Glenn on Monday. “They’re big and strong, and they embody the spirit we want for our offense—how we operate. Adding Olu last year and even some of the backups we took on board really strengthened our interior line.”

“Physicality is key,” said Vera-Tucker. “Each of us has a role to play every day. Communication among us is crucial for making it all work.”

There’s definitely some competition brewing. Tippmann, who started through all his games at center last season, is now up against free agent Josh Myers, who has a background with the Packers. Of those six linemen, four played together towards the end of last season. Membou, picked seventh in April’s draft, is a rookie now starting as right tackle, and both young players have certainly caught the attention of their veteran teammates.

“It might surprise you, but both the ol’ guys and their younger partners act like they’ve been around forever,” Tippmann shared. “They approach every day like seasoned veterans.”

A year ago, the Jets struggled, rushing for only 363 yards due to inconsistent performances. They ranked 16th in yards per carry at 4.3. However, this year’s strategy appears to be shifting significantly. With Justin Fields as quarterback, known for his mobility, and a promising running back lineup led by Brace Hall, the dynamics are changing.

“The coaching staff has been clear: we’re committing to the run this year, and that’s a change from what we’ve seen in the past,” Vera-Tucker mentioned. “As an offensive line, we really embrace that. Running the ball can tire out the defense and opens up the field for players like Wilson, giving us more options.”

Vera-Tucker, who has been with the Jets since they drafted him in 2021, shared that he’s enjoyed what he believes is the best offseason of his career.

No significant rehabilitation injuries, and he’s not having to adjust to a new position—he’s been comfortably situated at right guard.

“I had an offseason to just focus on training,” Vera-Tucker said, mentioning he feels fast and comfortable going into the season. “There’s definitely a chance we have the best offensive line in a long time.” But, he wasn’t ready to make any bold predictions just yet, considering it’s still just training camp. However, he’s optimistic.

“I think that’s entirely feasible,” Vera-Tucker concluded.
