Jets Struggles Continue with Offensive Line Deficiencies
Last week, the Jets faced a tough defeat against the Broncos, giving up nine sacks. This Sunday, they encountered a similar fate, as the Panthers sacked them six times in a 13-6 loss at home. It’s worth noting that the Panthers had only five sacks in their previous six games.
For the Jets, entering the season, they should have prioritized boosting their offensive line. Now, however, protecting their quarterback has turned into a significant challenge.
The Panthers were able to bring down Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields three times, resulting in a combined loss of 21 yards. Backup Tyrod Taylor also faced trouble, being taken down three additional times for a loss of 12 yards.
“We have to analyze the film and figure out what went wrong. It’s critical we address these issues moving forward,” Jets head coach Aaron Glenn remarked. He added, “It seemed like we were often in one-on-one situations, which simply can’t happen in these circumstances. It’s clear that teams will keep trying to pressure us, and we need to improve in those moments.”
Left guard John Simpson had a particularly challenging day, receiving a personal foul penalty in the first half that frustrated Glenn and led to his early exit from the game.
Simpson shared his perspective, saying, “At the end of the play, a defender stuck his thumb in my neck. Honestly, it was one of the strangest things I’ve ever encountered on the field.” He explained, “I tried to get his thumb out, but when I couldn’t, I grasped his face mask—just about to pull it off.”
He reflected on the incident, accepting accountability, “I should have just walked away. I know it could have been avoided; it was a careless mistake on my part. That sort of behavior only puts the team in a difficult spot, and I need to do better.”
Later, Simpson was flagged again, this time for a false start on the Jets’ next possession. Concerning the team’s overall performance, especially regarding the six sacks, he commented, “Honestly, I’d rather not even discuss it. We really need to improve. I’m one of the veterans on the line, and I have to set a better example.”
This marks the second consecutive game where the Jets have failed to score a touchdown, a trend that is believed to be linked to their offensive line struggles.
“We need to take things step by step. Ultimately, we have to concentrate on the details and focus on what we can control,” Simpson emphasized. “Just keep grinding, that’s what we have to do.”
