Jewish Democrats Urge Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid in Gaza
A coalition of influential Jewish Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer from New York and Senator Adam Schiff from California, is pressing the Trump administration to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. They are also addressing what they label as a “humanitarian crisis.”
This initiative comes amid unsettling reports of Palestinian casualties linked to malnutrition in the war-affected areas.
Leaders like Schumer, Schiff, Senator Brian Schatz from Hawaii, Vice Democrat Whip Schatz, and Senator Jackie Rosen from Nevada have penned a letter to Secretary Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff. The letter asserts that the conditions in Gaza are “unsustainable,” particularly noting the plight of children.
In total, 40 Senate Democrats have added their signatures to this letter. Notable names include Senator Tammy Baldwin from Wisconsin, Michael Bennett from Colorado, Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut, Chris Coons from Delaware, Dick Durbin from Illinois, Kirsten Gillibrand from New York, and Chris Murphy from Connecticut.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a U.S.-based nonprofit aimed at providing food aid in Gaza, has commented that there has been a failure to address the deep humanitarian crisis, resulting in unacceptable civilian casualties around its operations.
Recent reports from the UN Human Rights Office indicate that over 1,000 Palestinians have lost their lives due to Israeli military actions since May, particularly while attempting to access food at official distribution centers.
The Democrats are calling for a “massive expansion” of humanitarian assistance and services across Gaza, advocating for the distribution of aid by experienced multilateral organizations and NGOs.
Furthermore, they emphasized that achieving an end to the conflict would necessitate the dismantling of Hamas’ control, ensuring it no longer poses a significant military threat to Israel.
The group reiterated its commitment to U.S.-led diplomacy with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders, striving for a long-term solution involving two states that coexist peacefully, securely, and with mutual recognition.
Democrats have raised their “strong opposition” to the permanent forcible evacuation of Palestinians from Gaza, citing concerns about violations of international humanitarian law and the need for a sustainable resolution that prioritizes the long-term security of both Israelis and Palestinians.
They also articulated support for all hostages held by Hamas and diplomatic efforts aimed at returning the bodies of individuals presumed to include Americans Omer Nutra and Itai Chen to their families.
