On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Lead,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) said Jewish students are “going through” the same experiences as Black students in Little Rock. I’m worried about their lives. ”
“I feel two sides to this moment,” Adams said. “As I said earlier, I understand the pain that is happening in Israel and Gaza at this time. I understand what Palestinian New Yorkers are going through. I understand what the Israelis are saying and want to express it in a peaceful way.[s] So the duality of that moment is important. ”
he continued. “But I also think back to Little Rock, Arkansas, and what that meant to African-Americans being escorted around campus fearing for their lives. And that’s what this moment is about. What I see when I see Jewish students going through this situation is that there is no room for hatred in this city, whether it’s anti-Semitism or Islamophobia. I don’t care if you’re Sikh. We don’t have a place for that, and I don’t want to be a mayor where you have to take off your hijab, yarmulke, and turban when you enter a higher education institution. Or take transit or walk down the street.”
