Jill Biden Discusses Media Relations and Her Memoir

In June, former first lady Jill Biden appeared on “The View” with co-host Whoopi Goldberg to discuss her memoir, “A View from the East Wing,” along with her views on politics and media. During the conversation, Biden was asked whether she believed the media provided fair coverage of her husband, President Joe Biden, throughout his term.

She paused before responding, saying, “You know, maybe, well, I mean, looking at the situation right now, I don’t know. I don’t know. We’ll have to think about that.”

Later, she expressed that the Biden administration could have done a better job connecting with the media. “But I think we could have been more open with the press and tried to get them to understand us as real people and not as celebrities. That’s one of the things I regret, maybe we could have had a closer relationship,” she reflected.

Biden added that she perceives a “double standard” in how the Biden administration is covered compared to the Trump administration. “You know, if Joe had done any of the things that are happening now, he would have been condemned,” she remarked, prompting laughter from Goldberg.

“But, you know, it’s just there. It’s like there’s a double standard. And I don’t think that’s fair and I don’t think it was fair,” she continued.

In separate remarks, Jill Biden addressed criticisms from some Democrats who felt her memoir might reignite tensions ahead of the 2024 election. During a book event in Washington, a former White House press secretary publicly questioned the motives behind her writing. Biden responded assertively, inviting a direct conversation, and emphasized that her book contains “only one chapter on politics.”
