Concerns Over Democratic Support for Graham Platner
Michael LaRosa, a former press secretary for Jill Biden, expressed his surprise at the level of support for Graham Platner, a Senate candidate from Maine. LaRosa noted that some Democrats he considers friends are backing Platner, which he finds perplexing.
“I’m really taken aback that certain Democrats are so committed to this guy,” LaRosa shared. “To me, he doesn’t seem to reflect the values I expect from a Democratic candidate. It’s kind of surprising how many are rallying just to oppose Susan Collins.”
Despite Platner’s rising poll numbers, he faces backlash due to resurfaced explicit online posts and troubling remarks, including those mocking a Purple Heart veteran. LaRosa criticized Democrats for overlooking these serious issues in Platner’s past.
LaRosa warned that the party might be making a risky choice. He commented, “It’s fascinating to see how selective and short memories can be in politics.” He personally cannot support someone he sees as problematic, citing Platner’s tattoos as a line he won’t cross. “I want Democrats to win, but not at any cost. I won’t endorse someone just to shake things up in the party,” he said.
He further explained his preference for Republican Senator Susan Collins over Platner, noting that Platner’s prior education at a prestigious school doesn’t align with his claimed populist stance. “It’s a bit odd to hear him speak against elites when he comes from such privilege,” LaRosa remarked.
To him, backing Platner might be fruitless. “Winning means nothing if it means endorsing someone like him.” He pointed out that just because Platner is a Democrat doesn’t make him fit for the Senate. “That alone doesn’t ensure he’s a good candidate. If standards slip, what’s the point?”
LaRosa also referenced past election experiences, cautioning that high polling doesn’t guarantee victory, recalling how Collins never lagged behind in the polls against her previous opponent. “We thought we were in a strong position, but on election day, Maine voters favored both Biden and Collins,” he noted.
Platner emerged as a likely Democratic candidate after Governor Janet Mills withdrew from the race last month. LaRosa remarked that moderate views that some Democrats criticize today were once considered standard within the party, highlighting a worrying trend. He indicated that similar tactics used against candidates like John Fetterman could backfire on the party.
LaRosa emphasized the need for Democrats to reconsider their approach, warning they may face disappointment if they continue down this path. He made it clear he would not support or contribute to Platner.
As the primary election approaches, LaRosa pointed out that Maine voters face a choice between Platner and Collins, ultimately leaving the decision in the hands of the electorate. “It’s now up to the people of Maine to determine if Platner aligns with their values and frustrations,” he concluded.
