Jillian Michaels Shares Tips for Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

In a recent chat, celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels discussed staying healthy during the holidays. She emphasized the importance of “practicing balance.” According to her, the secret lies in what she calls the 80-20 rule.

Michaels explained, “It’s pretty basic, really. Anyone can get it, and anyone can do it.” The main idea is to manage your “calorie balance.” For instance, if a man is 44 years old, exercises a few times a week, and burns around 2,500 calories daily, following the 80-20 rule makes sense. Essentially, this means consuming around 2,000 calories—80 percent of his intake should be sensible choices.

She elaborated, “It’s similar to checking your bank account. Energy in, energy out. So, if you have 2,500 calories to work with, stick to logical food choices for the larger part, then enjoy your 20 percent with some treats like a slice of pie or a glass of wine.” This way, you’ll stay within limits while still enjoying seasonal indulgences.

Michaels pointed out that the problem with holiday weight gain isn’t necessarily about those few pounds gained during a vacation. It’s the accumulation of small, unchecked gains over the years that can add up to significant weight. “Just a couple of extra calories a day can lead to substantial weight over time,” she noted.

She added that if you enjoy some holiday treats at a party, balance is key. “You might have to hit the gym the next day to offset that,” she said, emphasizing the idea of “paying the Piper.” It’s all about maintaining a routine and keeping track of your intake.

Experts agree that managing holiday splurges is akin to sticking to a budget. “If you’re planning to indulge, cut back in other areas,” Michaels advised. For example, opting for egg whites instead of a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast can save calories for later treats.

She warned against an “all-or-nothing” mentality, which often leads to yo-yo dieting. “Consistency is what truly matters,” Michaels remarked. If you enjoy a hearty meal one day, you can balance it out the next. “It’s about finding that rhythm that keeps you healthy in the long haul,” she explained.

This holiday season, Michaels and her family, including her wife Deshana Marie Minuto and their two children, plan to celebrate in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “I’m so excited for snowboarding!” she said, expressing her enthusiasm for family time and winter activities.

While she enjoys her new life in Wyoming, family commitments will require some travel back to Los Angeles. “You can easily hop back for family obligations,” she noted, reflecting on the importance of family ties.

During this time, she expressed gratitude for her loved ones. “Every day I’m thankful for my family’s safety, especially when I know others have faced such challenges,” she stated, reflecting on the deeper meaning of gratitude this season.
