Winter Storm Warning from Jim Cantore
Jim Cantore, a meteorologist from the Weather Channel, hasn’t revealed his deployment plans for the weekend just yet, but he’s sounding alarms about a major winter storm threatening a broad area, including the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, potentially affecting over half of the U.S. population.
The details are still unfolding, so the storm’s exact impact may shift as the week goes on. On Tuesday morning, Cantore shared an urgent message via social media, indicating that the storm could impact areas from the Southern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic, with effects beginning “Friday afternoon” and lasting “through Tuesday.”
Alongside significant snowfall, an arctic air mass is expected to follow closely, solidifying the snow and lingering around for a bit. This isn’t just a light dusting; it could stick around for several days, causing complications.
Cantore noted, “Most areas of the region are still facing arctic temperatures and heavy winter precipitation. Very cold conditions will persist after the storm, making it harder to melt and manage any accumulated ice and snow.” It seems like January is wrapping up with quite a rough patch across the eastern U.S.
The incoming storm is predicted to deliver a hazardous combination of winter weather, featuring snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Cantore expressed worry about the potential cumulative effects, sharing that some of the forecasts he reviewed that morning were particularly alarming regarding ice accumulation.
Parts of the Mid-Atlantic may face some of the heaviest snowfall seen in years. Cantore commented, “Ideally, we’d like much of it to come down as sleet, but any freezing rain might surpass an inch and lead to really tough conditions. Double-digit snow isn’t out of the question, especially in the Mid-Atlantic, with significant snowfall anticipated for Washington, D.C., and possible ice along the Southeast coast.”
