Jim Cramer Believes It's Time for the Federal Government to Stop Gathering Economic Data

Concerns Over Economic Data Reporting

CNBC’s Jim Cramer stated on Thursday that the federal government is struggling to provide accurate economic data, suggesting that perhaps the private sector should take over this responsibility.

This conversation gained traction after President Trump dismissed the Director of Labor Statistics following a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in July that claimed only 73,000 jobs were created. However, the data for May and June had seen significant revisions. Cramer voiced his doubts about government officials’ understanding of how they calculated the figures they reported.

“It seems like there are a lot of inaccuracies, and we’re uncovering flaws in the system,” Cramer remarked. “If someone were to ask how we arrived at that cargo figure or warehouse count, I don’t think they’d have a clear answer.”

On the same day, the BLS released information indicating that the producer price index had increased by 3.3% year-on-year in July, marking the largest rise since February. Trump announced his intention to nominate economist Eji Antoni from the Heritage Foundation for the position of Commissioner at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Cramer also reflected on co-host Carl Quintanilla’s comments regarding the handling of recent incidents, stating, “I’ve been expressing my concerns for a while now that the public sector can’t manage this reality anymore. We have the technology and models to determine the accurate numbers. We just need to bring those capabilities in-house.” He added a light-hearted jab about stocks seemingly reverting back yesterday.

In August 2024, the Biden administration admitted that the BLS had overreported job creation by more than 800,000 positions.
