Jimmie Johnson to Retire from NASCAR After 2027 Daytona 500

Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time champion of the NASCAR Cup Series, revealed on Saturday that the 2027 Daytona 500 will mark his final Cup Series race.

While Johnson has enjoyed significant success, including winning prestigious races twice, he plans to pursue opportunities in other racing series and possibly some NASCAR events, but he has no plans to return to the top tier of stock car racing.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to achieve more than I ever thought possible in this sport,” Johnson expressed. “In recent years, I’ve had the freedom to select where I race, and now I really understand where I can make the biggest impact. My focus will be on leading and building a top-tier organization.”

Toyota Vice President Tyler Gibbs acknowledged Johnson’s legacy, highlighting not only his driving achievements but also his role within the Legacy Motor Club and his family. “As he gets ready to close this chapter in a career filled with accolades, we celebrate his contributions and eagerly anticipate our future endeavors,” Gibbs stated.

Johnson’s seven championships tie him with NASCAR legends Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for the most titles in the sport’s history. He won his first five consecutive titles between 2006 and 2010 and added two more in 2013 and 2016.

After stepping back from full-time racing post-2020 season, Johnson secured 83 victories in the Cup Series. He also raced in the IndyCar Series for two seasons (2021-22), co-owned the Legacy Motor Club, and participated in notable events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

This year’s Daytona 500 will be Johnson’s 23rd appearance in the race. “It’s the only race where you can secure the title,” he noted earlier this week, remembering the significance of that moment. “I was fortunate to experience that. Once you leave here, whatever else you do may not carry the same weight. Winning a title here really highlights the race’s importance and history.”

“When you earn a title, you’re reminded of that title every time you’re introduced,” he added, reflecting on the honor of his achievements.
