Jimmy Garoppolo is not retiring and aims to continue playing in the NFL.

Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t quite ready to hang up his cleats just yet.

Having spent 12 seasons in the NFL, the veteran quarterback seems open to at least one more season.

At 34, Garoppolo weighed retirement this past spring but remains scheduled to play in 2026. He’s expected to finish the 2025 season as a backup to Rams’ quarterback Matthew Stafford.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo shared some insights about Garoppolo’s situation.

“From what I gather, Jimmy G is keeping his options open. He’s not planning to retire; he just needed some time off this offseason,” Garafolo mentioned.

“It’s not likely anything will happen soon. Without a quarterback injury, he probably won’t be signing with anyone. It seems a veteran presence, possibly as a backup, might be required down the line.”

Garoppolo, who has previously led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in February 2020, spent the last two years as a backup in Los Angeles but will now seek to join another team, especially after the Rams selected Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson in the recent NFL Draft.

Even though he may not sign immediately, opportunities are likely to arise. Injuries in the league are, well, pretty common, so it’s anyone’s guess how the season might unfold.

If a team ends up with a struggling quarterback roster, Garoppolo could find himself stepping in later this year. This latest update effectively puts retirement rumors to rest.

“But, just to be clear, Jimmy Garoppolo is not retiring. He’s set to keep playing.”
